LIMITATION - SRIRAM ATHRI

March 12, 2019

Our potentials are far greater than our limitations said Bruce lee. The street fighter who became world famous in his skillful display of the power within. His sayings were from his personal experience. He did not possess a perfect body to be able to take on the world. He had many personal handicaps. His left leg was shorter than his right leg. This would have caused him an imbalance in his pursuit of being the best karate expert in the world. What makes him apart was that he never looked at his weakness as a limitation. Instead he converted his weakness into a strength. He always kept his leg in front that gave him a spring like disposition to his body. This enabled him to be swift in his movements. Similarly, he was shortsighted in his eye. This meant that he was not able to see clearly from a distance. This certainly would have been a disadvantage in a fight. He took this weakness in his stride and compensated for the same by being closer to his opponent. This gave him a clear vision but he relied on his swiftness in taking appropriate action. He practiced on his speed of action which won him laurels. Again his weakness turned over as his strength. He also was from the eastern continent that his English was pathetic. At a young age of 20 he realized that this would prevent him from making it big in English ground. He studied English with concentration and passion that within a short time he could communicate in English. He would concentrate on his potentials and thus broke the barriers of limitations.

Being limitless is the limitation said Bruce Lee. Every weakness has a lesson to teach us. It can be a trigger to another aspect of ours to grow. Everyone has a baggage of disabilities whether of the body or of the Mind. What is in the Body is acceptable, for hardly anything can be done about it. Acceptance of the same is a show of strength. It is a matter of inclusiveness in the matrix of life. This smoothens the ‘fight with reality’ component.

Limitation is the product of the Mind. Mary Kom, a mother of two has been the world number one in Boxing in women category, not only because she practiced her skill for many years, but she had in her to push her limitations to the hilt. Similarly, Helen Keller who was deaf, dumb and mute turned out to handle her mind efficiently that she never felt disempowered.

If you always put limit on everything you do, physical or anything else. It will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them. In the Now there is only a concentrated effort to reach your peak in performance. The hard work to excel continues. The Mind is on the effort and on the skill and the only thought existing in the Mind is to express the talent that is within you. The desire to blossom the bud that is within. The Mind is on its Inward journey with one pointed focus on the potentials. However, when the Mind is distracted by the self talk arising out of memories of the past, disempowerments of the “ I Cant “ , then the Limitations start creating the borders. It is the vagaries of the Mind that create the hurdles. We live in our Minds. Hence we fall victims to the contents of the self talk of the Mind. To achieve success, the first thing that we need to cultivate is the Art of handling the Mind. Words of disempowerment arise from the company we keep, the peer influence, the community thought, the memories of the past and desires of greed and glamour. Logically it will sound correct and there will be no argument against the self- imposed limitations. There is a saying “ Let me Know what is the company you keep and I will tell you who you are”. The Alertness is what is required. The Alertness to keep a watch on the impact on the Mind. The undisciplined mind too easily slips into the past and the future, veering towards the likes and dislikes, the fears and insecurities that prevent you from being focused on the present objectives. A calm intellect is productive. If we cannot manage our Mind, we cannot Manage the outcome of our own Logic. Dynamism in action, concentrated effort towards your objectives and clarity in thinking is what is necessary. You get what you deserve and not what you desire. Limitations are the well -crafted hurdles that we have put on ourselves . In the journey from where you are to where you wish to go, there can be several words of disempowerment that can push you back and they will sound right. It is the nature’s way of making your Mind more determined and resolute. When we stay with the words of empowerment and nourish the thoughts of possibilities in the face of hurdles, success is guaranteed.
